The ranking was prepared by the CB Insights team that utilized the CB Insights platform to pick 100 private AI companies from a pool of over 7,000 companies!. The winners were selected based on factors including market potential, business relationships, tech novelty, team strength, R&D activity, investor profile, news sentiment analysis, competitive landscape, and proprietary Mosaic scores. The research team also reviewed thousands of analyst briefings submitted by the applicants.
One-third of the companies in this year’s cohort are working on AI infrastructure solutions to support the management of various stages of the AI lifecycle, from data annotation to model training, validation, and monitoring for algorithmic bias.

- Equity funding and deals: Since 2017, the 2022 AI 100 cohort has raised $12 billion+ from 650 investors, across 300+ equity deals.
- Unicorns: There are 16 companies with $1 billion+ valuations on the list.
- Geographic distributions: Seventy-three of the selected companies are headquartered in the US. Eight of the winners are based in the UK, five in Canada, and other countries represented in this year’s list include Switzerland, India, Sweden, China, and Germany.
